Stainless steel relies on a surface passivation film for corrosion protection. Proper maintenance can extend its service life and maintain its bright, clean appearance. For dust and easily removable dirt, use soap, mild detergent, or warm water to clean. For grease, oil, and lubricant stains, first wipe clean with a soft cloth, then clean with a neutral detergent, ammonia solution, or a specialized detergent. For bleach and various acid residues, rinse immediately with water, then soak in ammonia solution or a neutral sodium bicarbonate solution, and finally wash with a neutral detergent or warm water.

Rainbow-like patterns on the surface are caused by excessive use of detergent or oil; these can be removed by washing with warm water and a neutral detergent. Rust caused by dirt can be cleaned with 10% nitric acid or an abrasive cleaner, or with a specialized cleaning agent.
